Sources and Sessions:
Recording songs for ALL SHOOK DOWN began sometime in the spring of 1990 in New York with producer Scott Litt. Initially, Westerberg and Litt built up Westerberg's original demos by layering them with additional instruments. Musicians were then brought in as recording continued in New York and then in Ocean Way Studios in Los Angeles. Without any clear idea that this would be a Replacements album, a lot of outside musicians were brought in to play. They included: Benmont Tench (keyboards) and Charley Drayton (drums) but also: Steve Berlin (sax), Michael Blair (drums), John Cale (viola and synthesizer on "Sadly Beautiful"), Abe Lincoln (trombone), Mauro Magellan [listed as "Mauro Majellan"] (drums), Johnette Napolitano (vocals on "My Little Problem"), Axel Niehaus (?), Terry Reid (vocals on "Someone Take the Wheel"), and David Schramm (?). In addition, Slim Dunlap, Tommy Stinson, and Chris Mars played on various tracks although the only track on which all four band members played was apparently "Attitude."
Unfortunately, we know very little about who played what on which song, besides a few tidbits here and there (Dunlap played the guitar solo on "Merry Go Round," Stinson played bass on "The Last"). Best guess is that Mars played drums on only one or two tracks, Dunlap played guitar on a handful of tracks, Westerberg playing lead on several, and Stinson played bass on almost all the tracks.
