TIM sessions
Session 1: January 1985
The band recorded three songs as part of an initial session at Nicollet Studios in Minneapolis produced by Alex Chilton:
1. Can't Hardly Wait
2. Left of the Dial
3. Nowhere Is My Home
"Can't Hardly Wait" was recorded in two versions, an acoustic version, in which Westerberg was accompanied by Mars (often called the "airshaft version") and a full-on electric version. Both versions were first officially released on the 2008 reissue of TIM. "Nowhere Is My Home" was first released on the UK-only release of the compilation BOINK! and later on the 2008 reissue of TIM. Finally, the Chilton-produced "Left of the Dial," was the only song from the session that ended up on the original version of TIM released in 1985.
Session 2: March 1985
The band recorded a couple of songs (from Mehr, 176) during a 2-day session at Nicollet Studios in Minneapolis with Tommy Erdelyi:
1. Kiss Me on the Bus
2. Little Mascara
"Kiss Me on the Bus" was officially released on the 2008 CD reissue of TIM while "Little Mascara" remains unreleased.
Session 3: June 1985 (Mehr, 177-184)
The band recorded at least 14 songs during this lengthy session at Nicollet:
1. Bastards of Young
2. Can't Hardly Wait
3. Dose of Thunder
4. Havin' Fun
5. Here Comes A Regular
6. Hold My Life
7. I Wanna Destroy You
8. I'll Buy
9. Kiss Me on the Bus
10. Lay It Down Clown
11. Left of the Dial
12. Little Mascara
13. Swinging Party
14. Waitress in the Sky
Of the 14 songs recorded, 10 were included on the original vinyl issue of TIM (the ones in yellow). Of the others, "Can't Hardly Wait" was issued on the ALL FOR NOTHING/NOTHING FOR ALL compilation in 1997 while the other three remain unissued. These included a Erdelyi-produced version of "Left of the Dial"; a cover of a song by the Soft Boys ("I Wanna Destroy You"), the opening track on their second studio album Underwater Moonlight from June 1980; and an original Tommy Stinson-penned song ("Havin' Fun") which was the first original song tracked by the Replacements NOT authored by Westerberg.
Overall, the band recorded 15 individual songs for TIM.
