"I'll Be You"
7" single 45 RPM
Sire/Reprise 7-22992
April 1989
Side A
1. I'll Be You [3:27]
Side B
2. Date To Church [3:48]
Cover text:
Produced by Matt Wallace and the Replacements
Tom Waits appears courtesy of Island Records
Songwriters:
"I'll Be You" by Paul Westerberg
"Date To Church" by Reverend Backwash [Westerberg]
Additional Information:
This was only the third 7" single released by the Replacements in the U.S. market, the others being "I'm In Trouble" and "Can't Hardly Wait." While the a-side was the same version of the song as on the album DON'T TELL A SOUL, the b-side was a unique song available only on the single, and recorded with guest artist Tom Waits.
The song was the only release by the Replacements to make the Billboard Hot 100, reaching a peak of #51 on the singles chart. On Billboard's more specialized "Album Rock Singles" chart, it actually reached the #1 position on March 25, 1989 (curiously, before its physical release). That chart ranking was based only on airplay.
